Hello Hello,
On January 4th I completed one year without drinking alcohol, it has been a completely unexpected journey and full of happiness and some sadness. The first thing you should know is that IT IS NOT EASY, BUT IT IS NOT IMPOSSIBLE.
The things I have learned/lived:
1. That I have the most bastard willpower and determination.
2. I have been increasing my self-esteem.
3. People's opinions stopped caring.
4. I received rejection by those people who believe that without alcohol I cannot have fun.
5. I lost many "friends".
6. I have taken responsibility for my decisions and prioritized my health and my body.
7. I discovered new passions and new ways in which I can feel fulfilled.
8. I have been able to enjoy my weekends because I have more time to do activities that I like, instead of dealing with hangovers and headaches etc etc.
9. I have discovered new flavors and types of soft drinks.
10. Reaffirm who my real friends were and that they supported decisions that made me grow as a person.
When I started the process of quitting alcohol, I would get a lot of cravings (cravings for alcohol are real) and I wanted to drink whether it was half a michelada or just a little bit of beer, but I always remembered why I had made my decision. Then people started using social pressure and trying to convince me (this is something that makes me uncomfortable), at first I went into explanations, now I simply say, I don't like it, thank you. Over time you begin to notice that being drunk and having a hangover makes no sense, let alone spending money on alcohol. You will find people with whom you can go out and have fun without having to explain yourself and who will respect your decisions.
Each person is completely free to decide what they can do with their life, however, I would have appreciated if someone had told me with love and concern that alcohol would not get me very far. Please take care of your body, alcohol is poison (you can look for scientific articles), the truth is that I have learned much more since I decided to quit.
