It's worth mentioning that the FARC-EP, during the years 1996-2012, financed their group through extortion kidnappings and drug trafficking, the latter being the main way to obtain money.

In the 1990s, the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia (AUC) were formed, a paramilitary and far-right organization that was made up of groups of cattle ranchers and drug traffickers from the regions threatened and extorted by the guerrillas. Its purpose was to combat the FARC-EP and ELN, this has been the guerrilla group that has caused the most deaths (35,683 murders). Their financing came from kidnappings and drug trafficking, they have had support or have financed political campaigns for high-level positions (it's what is known as parapolitics, currently in force in the state), one of the most important investigations in this regard is that of the current senator and former president (2002-2010) Álvaro Uribe Vélez, who has 56 open complaints before the accusations commission and 28 investigations against him in the Supreme Court of Justice, one of his many accusations is the possible financing of his political campaign by of the AUC.

The AUC murdered civilians and trade unionists, they are also blamed for forced displacement and land dispossession.

In 2002, Álvaro Uribe Vélez was elected president (yes the one with the 56 complaints and 28 investigations against him in the Supreme Court), creator of the political party: Democratic Center. With his motto: "firm hand big heart" he promises to put an end to drug trafficking and terrorism, so he invests billions of pesos in military force and in a period of 8 years he minimizes the guerrilla troops, in the news, everyone every day, there was a talk about the large number of guerrillas killed in combat, during his tenure paramilitary and guerrilla groups demobilized.

 

But not everything had a positive balance, Álvaro was accused of buying votes in congress to approve his re-election, corruption in secure agricultural income, DAS hacks and they have found connections with paramilitaries.

During the Uribe period, also became known false positives, many young peasants were offered work in other cities and there the National Army killed them and passed them off as guerrillas. In this case, Álvaro Uribe Vélez (president for 8 years), the then defense minister (Juan Manuel Santos, former president of Colombia from 2010-2018, PEACE Nobel Prize winner) and members of the armed forces ( so far 805) have been sentenced).
