7 Realistic Tips for a Stress-Free Move

 Hello,

Things are pretty hectic right now. After the 30th, I was going to be out of a job, and on the 29th I have to travel to the new city. On the 27th or 28th (still to be confirmed), someone will come pick up the boxes and my stuff to take them. However, there are still many things I need to manage, and there’s less and less time. Regarding my job, my boss told me today that she didn’t want me to leave the company, so she assigned me other tasks (tell me you're in a toxic job without telling me you're in a toxic job). I said yes, because job hunting at this time of year is quite complicated. Still, I no longer feel very secure in that place.

This situation showed me once again how vulnerable you can be when you lose a job. I want to look for something affordable to study online, so I can have more options when unpredictable situations like this come up.

Now, here are some tips for moving house when you struggle with change and also don’t enjoy packing or getting things ready:

1. Go at your own pace, without overwhelming yourself:

Assign yourself moving-related tasks each day so you can make progress without getting overwhelmed. In my case, I bought the boxes and tape over a weekend, the next weekend I started assembling them, a few days later I began packing, and so on.

2. Take care of administrative tasks in advance (not like me!):

Figure out what needs to be handled before handing over the place, for example, I need to cancel my internet service. You should start dealing with these kinds of things at least a month in advance. Don’t do what I did, I haven’t even made the first call to start the cancellation process. I also haven’t transferred my healthcare system registration yet.

3. Get quotes from several moving companies:

That way, you can choose the best price and a company you feel safe with. Don’t do what I did, I just asked someone recommended by my boyfriend’s brother, and I’ve only spoken to him twice (he’s still trying to find me a truck for the weekend).

4. Wash clothes and utensils with enough time in advance:

That way, you can carefully organize items in the boxes, especially fragile ones like glasses and plates. In my case, I haven’t finished sorting the kitchen, there are still things pending, and I haven’t even started packing them.

5. If you want to sell some of your items:

Post them on social media about two weeks in advance so you have time to negotiate and sell to the highest bidder. Don’t do what I did, I just posted a photo of the stove today, and I still haven’t posted the fridge because it hasn’t been fully cleaned yet.

6. Clean all the rooms:

Don’t forget to have the apartment ready a week before the move. That way, you can fix any damage if needed (in my defense, I haven’t damaged anything in the apartment, but so far I’ve only swept, and the bathroom and kitchen still need cleaning).

7. If you have a pet:

Talk to the vet in advance to check them, update vaccines (if needed), and get any required paperwork signed. Don’t do what I did, I haven’t contacted the vet, even though the clinic is less than an 8-minute walk away.

Conclusion: Moving is a process, not a race

Well… in my case, it is a race against time. So don’t make my mistakes, plan everything ahead of time.

That’s all for today. I’m going to eat now, it’s 10:26 p.m. and I haven’t eaten yet. I won’t do anything else tonight; I’ll leave the stove soaking in degreaser and continue tomorrow. I’ve decided not to do laundry because my aunt is making it really difficult for me to borrow her washing machine.
